SEPTEMBER I NATIONAL HUNGER MONTH
Hunger is complex and often misunderstood. In the United States, hunger is neither caused by overall food shortages nor by the personal choices of hungry people. Hunger in America is about poverty and the social forces that create and sustain it. This month was established in 2008 as a nationwide push to raise awareness of the problem of hunger. For those of us who have enough, and even more than enough food, the statistics seem unreal. Over 47 million people struggle daily to have enough to eat. Many of our Duplin County neighbors, especially children and senior citizens, are vulnerable. They depend on “other” to bridge the gap between limited finances and the need for healthy, nutritious food.
Duplin Christian Outreach Ministries supports five pantries within Duplin County. Grace by Faith Pantry located 2635 S. NC Highway 11, Rose Hill, 28458 serving the Charity, Greenevers, Rose Hill, Magnolia Communities, Rose Hill Methodist Church, dedicated to serving our Senior population located in the Rose Hill, Magnolia an Betholite Community, located on Church Street, Rose Hill, NC (will be opening soon), Spartan’s Table located at James Sprunt Community College, Kenansville, NC serving the students at James Sprunt and the Kenansville Community by referrals, Helping Hands Pantry located 205 W Main Street, Wallace, NC, ( referrals preferred from other Agencies and DCOM ) located 205 W Main Street, Wallace, NC., and one Mobile Pantry serving the Northern part of Duplin County.
